A bronze Memorial To Sledge Dogs
This bronze memorial was commissioned to recognize the sledge dogs of the Antarctic who led many a teams of men and women between 1945 and 1993.
Since the turn of the 20th century the dogs have been used for polar travel and support for scientific exploration, and were considered a safer alternative to vehicles.
Legislation was put in place to remove the dogs because of concerns they may contaminate the natural wildlife. The last of the huskies were removed in 1994. No breeding was possible with the remaining dogs, and all of the dogs have since passed.
